What are essential oils?
They are the distilled or otherwise extracted essences of plants, flowers, grasses, bark and other botanicals. They are the life force of plants, supplying vitality, energy and their scent. Essential oils are a remarkable resource from nature with some remarkable healing properties. The chemistry of essential oils is fascinating, and allows you to understand their power and complexity. While certain constituents of essential oils have been re-created in a laboratory, it is impossible to duplicate the substance found in nature. It is this reason that natural essential oils have such a greater impact compared to their synthetic counterparts.
Be very careful about the quality of essential oils when purchasing them. Unfortunately, the industry is wrought with fraud, and it is up to you to be aware of what you are buying.
GENUINE & AUTHENTIC
Since essential oils are not regulated, the quality and purity of them is all over the map. It is important to be an informed consumer when it comes to purchasing them or products that contain them. There is a designation of quality and purity of essential oils in aromatherapy called: Genuine and Authentic (g&a). This is the highest quality attainable for essential oils, and they are not always easy to find. The harvest and distillation processes of oils that receive the g&a designation are meticulously managed to ensure the final resulting superior quality oils. They are definitely more expensive, but well worth the price.
According to Kurt Schnaubelt, PhD., founder of The
Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy in San Rafael, CA,
“a truly genuine and authentic essential oil should
always be guaranteed in three aspects: the plant, the
distillation process and the essential oil itself.”
The other labels of essential oils like: “Pure”, “100%
Natural” or even “Therapeutic Grade” do
not necessarily imply the highest quality. It is important
for the highest quality essential oils if you want
specific results. Like varying grades and qualities
of olive oil or wine, lesser grades of essential oils
have their place. Just make sure you know what you
are buying, and that the essential oils are appropriate
for your purposes.
